You are a bridesmaid...now what?

As a wedding planner I sometimes see bridesmaids who are frustrated with their friend (the bride) or vice versa. This stress is normally an issue because of unmet and possibly never stated expectations. This week we will talk about the duties and responsibilities of a bridesmaid. Hope you enjoy!

Congratulations! Your dear friend is engaged. She will or already has asked you to be a bridesmaid or maid of honor. You are probably so excited to be included in such a special way on your friend's big day. But do you know what a bridesmaid is expected to do? Other than smiling for pictures, what all does being a bridesmaid entail? Keep reading to find out below!

  1. Planning and organizing any showers the bride may want. This can include a lingerie shower, a bridal shower or possibly a joint couple shower. Make sure to ask what the bride wants before planning anything. Every bride (and couple) is different!
  2. Purchasing your bridesmaid dress and paying for any necessary alterations. Some brides may opt to purchase your dress as a gift, but this is not always the case. Be prepared to pay for your dress and alterations, as well as shoes or jewelry.
  3. Bridesmaids should also plan a fun Bachelorette party. Depending on the bride, she may want to stay local or she may want to do a little get away. The next post in this series will discuss a New Orleans Bachelorette party. Check it out Wednesday at 9 AM.
  4. Finally, you should otherwise support your friend, the bride, in this season of change. Planning a wedding and dealing with any associated emotions can be overwhelming. Help your friend enjoy her season of engagement.
